History
Let us go on a small journey in the past to know the origins of this village. The commune of Matran, whose history merges with that of the parish, is among oldest of the canton. No document makes it possible to fix in a precise way the origin of the locality indicated in 1138 under the name of Martrans in Nuithonie. The parish was founded at the 10th century by the kings of Burgundy, owners of the territory. The church, around which the village developed, was served a long time by the monks of Payerne which gave him like holy owner Julien, officer martyr as a Gaulle under the 3rd persecution. A priest, Dom Borcardus, exerted the ministry in 1148 there. The final name of Matran appears since 1578.The parish included/understood; in addition to the villages of Matran and Avry which compose it today, the village of Posieux, detached in 1590, and that of Neyruz, set up in parish in 1844.
The territory of Matran belonged to the old grounds, core of the canton, and provided to the city in the event of conflict a quota of one hundred soldiers going under the banner of Julien saint. No doubt, before returning to their homes, these warriors were going to be refreshed with the communal inn which existed already in XVIe century, since in 1553 the innkeeper was condemned to the prison for a misdeed passed in his establishment.
The children of Matran attended, in 1820 already, a school of quality since it had received, thanks to the know-how of the regent Macheret, a model license of school. This license however was withdrawn in 1822.
The post office of Matran opened in 1848. It served, in addition to Matran, the hamlets or localities of Glâne, Villars-sur-Glâne, Rosy Cormanon, Avry-sur-Matran and. The first tobacconist, Joseph Savarioud, did not bend however under the weight of the correspondence.
On Wednesday, September 3, 1862, towards 8:45 of the morning, under a gloomy sky, all the population of Matran pressed itself above the village, not to see leaving the swallows, but to greet the first train of the Freiburg-Lausanne line which one inaugurated this day the convoy passed in the middle of the hurrahs and from the frantically agitated flags, while the first Joseph Studmann, station master, greeted, strangled emotion and of pride, and that many spectators essuyaient the eyes, not because of the tears but to extirpate the ashes of them that the chimney of the engine, vomitting a black smoke, had liberally lavished to them.
109 years later, on Saturday, July 31, 1971, by a crushing heat, a convoy of bus GFM transporting the guests, inaugurated the Corpataux-Guin highway which crosses the village.
With the establishment of factories, the tracing of new roads, many family constructions, the aspect of the village changed little by little like the structure of the population. Of rural that it was exclusively formerly, this one comprises now workmen, employees, tradesmen, industrialists, of the monks, students.
But the forests are there always, that of Chavagny, the Wood of Deaths, Quiou, Monterban, Murat which shelters the castle built in 1909. Glâne also runs with serenity, requiring of its residents not to too much pollute it, imitated in that by his/her little sister Bagne from which the discrete course alas disappeared towards Riaux, victim of work of the highway.
Armorial bearings
The armorial bearings of the commune carry: “Of azure to the gold lion, holding a horn of plenty of mouth filled with pinks of same, broken into leaf of sinople”. They are the armorial bearings of a former patrician family, Odet, now extinct, whose downward last, Catherine, rest with the cemetery of Matran since 1908.Matran is a happy village, with its close horizon with the round forms and the splendid chain of Préalpes which closes its second horizon of the south in the east.
