Matos Costa

Matos Costa is a city Brésil ienne north of the State of Santa Catarina. It is located by a Latitude of 26º 28 ' 22" south and by a Longitude of 51º 08 ' 54" west, with a Altitude of: 1220 meters. Its population was estimated at: 3841 inhabitants in 2006. The municipality extends on 432 km ².

General information

The locality was born under the name of São João back Pobres . It started to grow starting from 1910 with the arrival of the Railroad São Paulo - Rio Grande C Sul. The local station was burnt during the Guerre of Contestado. The current name, going back to 1938, is a reference to the captain João Teixeira de Mattos Costa, killed during repression against the rebels who joined the cause of Contestado.
