Matityahou Shelem

Matityahou Shalem ( מתיתיהושלם ) is a type-setter, poet of language Hebrew, farmer and shepherd.

Year of birth: 1904;

Year of death: 1975;

Year of immigration in Israel: 1923.

In its book " The shepherd hébreu" , published in 1957, Matityahou Shalem written: " There would not exist today of Hebrew shepherd, without a preexistent ideal ".

Shalem immigrates in Israel at the time of the 3rd Aliyah, like practical realization of its ideal, and settles with the Kibboutz Beït-Esparto, where he becomes shepherd on the sides of the Mont Guilboa. In 1941, it passes to the kibbutz Ramat-Yohanan.

It combines the activities of shepherd, musician and poet, while finding his laic Jewish roots.

Shalem composes of the poems with pastoral topic, and many its popular songs are adapted in folk dances. It is its activity of shepherd who is the primary source of his inspiration.
