Mathurin Méheut

Mathurin Méheut , born in 1882 with Lamballe (Coast-with Armor) and died in 1958 with Paris, is a draftsman and multi-field artist.

Méheut was born in a family from craftsmen, it enters to the school of the Art schools of Rennes in 1897, then joined Paris. Its long and rich career really begin with a collaboration with the station from biology marinades Roscoff. It is there that it creates the bases of the splendid work Étude of the sea 1913-1914 . Then, he undertakes a voyage which will carry out it until the Japan, but is recalled for the First World War, at the time which he produces a great number of drawings, true testimony of the life in the trenches. Then, after the armistice it returns in its native Brittany, and becomes illustrator. He also teaches at the school of the Art schools. Its activity is rich: decoration of the steamer Normandy , illustrator of beautiful books, invaluable collaborator of the Faience manufacture Henriot with Quimper, etc Witness one time old, impassioned by the men of sound beautiful country, it furrowed the Brittany Rennes with Dinan, of Roscoff to Saint-Guénolé, in Pays Bigouden, leaving with the future generations a rich production and an invaluable testimony. The Mathurin-Méheut museum is located at Lamballe, in the city which saw it being born.

Mathurin Méheut was named official painter of the navy in 1921.

  • 1914: Travel to Hawaii then to Japan thanks to the “Stock Exchange around the world”. The voyage is stopped by the mobilization being a prelude to the 1st world war. Méheut returns to France and is built-in in October with the 136e regiment of infantry of Arras.

  • 1919: Demobilization. Méheut is named professor at the Boulle school and briefly at the Estienne school. It also starts to work with the Faïenceries Henriot in Quimper (Finistere).
  • 1921: Méheut is named official painter of the Navy. Second personal exposure to the Museum of Decorative Arts (House of Marsan). Breton, Japanese works and of war.
  • 1923: Personal exposure to San Francisco.
