Mathieu de Layens
Mathieu de Layens (death with Leuwen, on December 3rd, 1483) was an architect brabançon 15th century.
It was employed with Leuwen since 1433, initially under the orders of the architect Sulpitius de Vorst (death in 1439), then under the orders of Jan Keldermans II which it succeeded as master mason in 1445. At this point in time it developed the fortifications of the city and also directed the construction of the town hall (1448-1469). It constructed also the transept of the Saint-Pierre church.
Towards 1450, it worked on the Saint-Léonard church of Zoutleeuw, the Notre-Dame church of Tienen, and the Saint-Sulpice church of Diest. It took part starting from 1457 in the construction of the Holy-Waudru collegial in Mons and worked with the restoration of the town hall since 1479.
Its last work (1480-1487) was the construction of the enormous building of the Roundtable ( Tafelrond ) of the east coast of large places from Leuwen. The building, which was destroyed and replaced in 1818, was rebuilt with identical in 1921.
