Mathieu Ier of Lorraine
Mathieu Ier of Lorraine , known as Débonnaire , born towards 1110, dead the May 13rd 1176, was duke of Lorraine of 1139 with 1176. It was wire of Simon Ier, duke of Lorraine and Adelaide de Supplimbourg.
Biography
It succeeds his father at the time when a new dynasty, the Hohenstaufen, are installed on the imperial throne. Mathieu will reinforce the bonds between Lorraine and the Holy roman Empire, by marrying Judith de Hohenstaufen, also called Berthe (1123-1195), niece of the emperor Conrad III and sister of the future Frederic Barberousse.He accompanied Frederic Barberousse with many recoveries, in particular in 1155 for the crowning of the emperor by Adrien IV. He took by with the fight between the emperor supporting the antipape Adrien IV and the Pape Alexandre III, supported by the kings of France and Sicily.
Inside the duchy, it extended the ducal field while encroaching on the grounds of évéché of Toul, but made important donations with the Church and founded several abbeys.
He dies in 1176 and was buried with the abbey of Clairlieu, which he had founded with Villers-the-Nancy.

He had married towards 1138 Judith de Hohenstaufen (1123- † 1195), girl of Frederic de Hohenstaufen, duke of Souabe, and Judith of Bavaria and Saxony, which gave him:- Alix or Adélais († 1200), wife of Hugues III, duke of Burgundy
