Mathieu II of Lorraine
Mathieu II of Lorraine , born towards 1193, died in 1251, was duke of Lorraine of 1220 with 1251. It was wire of the duke Ferry II and Agnes of Bar.
Biography
It succeeds his brother Thiébaut Ier in 1220, and must immediately constitute a douaire, with the town of Nancy, for its sister-in-law Gertrude de Dagsbourg, who remarie with the count de Champagne Thibaut IV. It must moreover be recognized vassal of the count de Champagne for the town of Neufchâteau. Thibaut IV had hoped by his marriage to put the hand on the county of Metz, but failed and was not long in repudiating Gertrude. This one did not have children of a third marriage, and Nancy will return to the duchy to its death in 1225.Matthieu collaborates with the emperor Frederic II of Hohenstaufen and during the Sixth crusade accompanies it, then in Italy in 1235.
Mathieu had to face the agitation of certain Lorraine lords, like the count de Lunéville, discreetly supported by the count de Bar. A victory, follow-up of an exchange of grounds, allowed the fastening of Lunéville the duchy. In the years 1230, Henri II of Bar, helped of Hugues II of Vaudémont and bishop of Toul, devastate the duchy and appendix some castles.
Combined to the inhabitants of Metz and to the count Henri II of Bar, he was opposed to Jean Ier d' Apremont at the time of the Guerre of the Friends of 1231 to 1234.
The count of Bar Henri II having died in 1240, Mathieu tries to take again the castles lost on his young person wire, Thiébaut II of Bar, but peace is signed in 1245, and will last several decades. The same year the emperor Frederic II is excommunicated, and Mathieu starts to take distances, before adopting the Pape Innocent IV in 1247. He dies a few years later, in 1251, after having negotiated the marriage of his son with the girl of the count de Champagne.

He had married in 1225 Catherine de Limbourg († 1255), girl of Waléran III, count de Limbourg and of Luxembourg, and Ermesinde countess of Luxembourg, and had had:- Ferry III (1240 † 1302), duke of Lorraine
- Laure, married in 1250 in Jean de Dampierre Viscount of Troyes († 1258), then in Guillaume de Vergy, lord de Mirebeau and of Autrey
- Isabelle († 1266), married to Guillaume of Vienna († 1255), then in 1256 with Jean de Chalon (1243 † 1309), which, widowed, will be remariera with Alix of Burgundy and will become count d' Auxerre.
- Catherine, married in 1255 in Richard de Montfaucon († 1279), wire of Thierry III, count de Montbéliard
- Adeline († about 1278), married to Louis of Savoy († 1302), baron de Vaud
