Mathieu Cantacuzène , born in 1325, died in 1391, Byzantine emperor associated with his father of 1354 with 1357, wire of Jean VI Cantacuzène and Irene de Bulgarie.Il had married in 1341 with Irene Paléologue (1327 † 1357) and had had:
- Jean (1342 † 1380), despot of the Peloponnese
- Démétrios (1343 † 1384/1420), despot of Morée
- Théodora, nun in Constantinople
- Helene († 1394) my in Louis d' Aragon, count de Malte, of Gozzo and Salona († 1382)
- Marie, married about 1365 in Jean Lascaris Kalopheros
In 1346, his/her father entrusts to him the military government of the Thrace.
In 1347, when his/her father becomes emperor, it constitutes a principality with Andrinople all while being impatientant to be able to take the step on Jean V Paleologist in order to be able, one day, to succeed his/her father.
After the attempt at Jean V Paleologist to take again the capacity in 1352, Mathieu is associated with the imperial throne by his/her father. It is then crowned Co-emperor, in the church of the Blachernes, in February 1354. This crowning appears, with the eyes of the Byzantines, like the transfer of the hereditary capacity between the hands of the Cantacuzène family.
After the abdication of his/her father in 1355, it is maintained with the capacity, but it is made prisoner by the Serbes with Philips and is then delivered to Jean V. It is locked up, with his wife and her children, in the islands of Ténédos then of Lesbos.
In December 1355, he abdicates his imperial title during a ceremony which proceeds with Eibatai, on the Marmara Sea. He then withdraws near his Manuel brother, despotic of Mistra, which he succeeds, in 1380. In 1383, it is withdrawn in a monastery where it composes of the philosophical and religious works.
