Mathieu-Guillaume-Therese Villenave , literary man, journalist, lawyer, bibliophile and large collector of autographs (1762-1846)

Biography

Born with Saint-Felix de Caraman (Haute-Garonne), on April 13rd 1762, older brother of seven other children, it was intended initially at the ecclesiastical state. Endowed for the letters, it went up to Paris and became tutor and bound friendship with Madam de Staël. It took off the clerical dress when the French revolution burst and married with Nantes Tasset miss, a Frenchwoman who had passed her youth to London, of which it had two children, Melanie Waldor, poête and novelist, and Theodore Villenave, poête. He embraced the occupation of lawyer and about the middle of 1792, he accommodated in his Nantes house the astronomer and politician Bailly before this one was not stopped a little later with Melun and envoy with the scaffold. In 1793, it was the turn of Villenave and to his wife to be stopped in September. One contained Mrs Villenave with the castle of Luzancey, on the edges of the river which was used as theater with the executions of Carrier, while it was transported with 131 Nantes in Paris, all announced, like him, for their opinions counter-revolutionaries. They failed to be shot with Ancenis and drowned with Angers, it makes of it the account in its Relation of the voyage from one hundred thirty-two Nantes . Those which survived, like, were discharged to him thereafter. He followed then his occupation of lawyer and taken the defense of the members of the revolutionary committee of Nantes and also the majority of the Vendean chiefs, of which the general Cart. He gave up his occupation of lawyer to devote itself more exclusively but to the literature. Under the Empire and the Restoration, it took share with the drafting of several newspapers of which Daily the and the French Courrier . It translated Ovide and Virgile. Moreover Villenave especially had a remarkable collection of books and of autographs. It was first to propagate the taste of the autographs in France. He died in Nantes, on March 16th 1846.
