Mathias Zdarsky

Mathias Zdarsky , born the February 25th 1856 with Kozichowitz in Austria and deceased the June 20th 1940 with Sankt Pölten, was a pioneer of the Ski and was regarded as one of the founders of the technique of the Alpine skiing modern. He was the first instructor of Austrian ski. He was also professor, painter and Sculpteur.

Inspired by Fridtjof Nansen in its forwarding with the Greenland, it adapted its skis for a use on alpine grounds . In 1980, it develops fixings on its skis to descend the mountains and tries out the ski sticks (generally only one stick).

In January 1905, Zdarsky is tested in the first descents on steep slopes, and shows its technology in the material used that it exhibe with Schneeberg. The March 15th 1905, it organizes the first competition of Alpine skiing with Muckenkogel, competition which brings together 24 participants. Zdarsky gains it, making of him the first winner of the history of an official competition of Alpine skiing. The attention of the time around this event was less, contrary to that carried out in 1922 by the English Arnold Lunn at the time of a slalom which had a broader mediatization.

During its life, little world recognized in Zdarsky its role in the invention of this sport, but was regarded more as an eccentric inventor. It descrit its techniques of skis in its book " Die Lilienfelder Skilauf-Technik (The Lilienfelder Ski Method) " , published first once in 1897, then seventy other editions until in 1925.

He also invented the Sac of bivouac and a mountain in the Antarctic bears its name; the Mount Zdarsky .
