Mateusz (bishop of Cracow)

Mateusz (known also under the name of Cholewa ) (? - Cracow, October 18th 1166) is bishop of Cracow.

Mateusz is named bishop in 1143 by Ladislas II the Outlaw. The Pape Innocent II ratifies this decision. When in 1146 Ladislas II is exiled in Saxony, at the court of Conrad III, his/her young brothers seize Cracow. Mateusz succeeds in establishing with those of good relationships.

Mateusz is undoubtedly the author of the letter sent to Bernard de Clairvaux in 1147, inviting this one in Poland. Whereas he is bishop, a community of nun of the Prémontrés settles in Cracow in 1162. One year later, the Ordre of the Holy Sepulchre founds a Monastère there.
