Mateo Falcone
Introduction of volume
Mateo Falcone is a Nouvelle of Prosper Mérimée, finished on February 14th, 1829 and published with the subtitle Mœurs of Corsica , on May 3rd, 1829, in the review of Paris , founded in April of the same year. The local color, so strongly marked in this news, is drawn from the book sources, since Prosper Mérimée will visit Corsica only in 1839. The author, Mérimée, were appointed inspector of the historic buildings in 1834. But that did not make finish its career of writer.
Summary
It is the history of Mateo Falcone which lives with the edge of a forest. It has three girls and a son whom it regards as heir to family. One day, it will drive out with his wife in the forest and he decides that his/her son, Fortunato, must remain at the house to supervise it. A little later, it hears shots and it meets a man being called Gianetto which requires of him to hide it. It accepts only when this one offers 5 francs to him. Ten minutes later, six armed men present themselves at Mateo and ask where the man passed that they continued. Still there, one of these men gives him a watch so that the Fortunato young person reveals the hiding-place of Gianetto to them. Mateo returns and discusses with the men. Once they left, his wife having guessed the idea of her husband, begs it to stop but without listening to it, it goes, with his son, in the forest and the slaughtering of a rifle shot.
Explanation of died of Fortunato
It is of a time when the gangsters are legends and to denounce them is regarded as a dishonor. Mateo Falcone being a former gangster did not accept this treason on behalf of his/her own son, which can explain why it cut down it.
