Isigny-on-Sea is a common French, located in the department of the Calvados and the area Basse-Normandie.

Its inhabitants is called the Isignais .

Geography

At the bottom of bay of Veys it is an important dairy, known center for its butter and its cream AOC, thus for its cheeses (Mimolette, Pont-l'Ev4eque cheese, Camembert, Trésor of Isigny, etc) manufactured with the co-operative “Isigny Sainte Mother”. Since second half of the 20th century, the ostreiculture is largely developed in the vicinity in bay of Veys (isigny on sea) A river, the Vire passes by the commune.

History

Borough of average importance supported by its geographical location, its history merges with the economic activity. The industrialization of the dairy transformation of develops at the beginning of the 19th century, and led to the creation of several factories in particular by the dynasty of Dupont d' Isigny which will diversify with the creation of the famous Caramels of Isigny. Then it will be the Cooperative dairy of Isigny which will hold the top of the paving stone. In parallel, the agricultural fairs and the markets will make of Isigny a famous center.

The port, often forgotten, knew an important activity: accommodating the inshore navigation, it made it possible to maintain and develop marketing activities and industrial (wood importation of north, export of Beurre and coal of the mine of Littry). Fishing held to with it a big role until the end of the years 1970 (fishing with the mould S, the famous " Caïeu d' Isigny" , and with the hulls starting from small boats, the picoteux ones, armed by the fishermen with the district with Hogues).

Destroyed with more than 60% by two waves of bombardments the June 8th 1944, Isigny was almost entirely rebuilt. The Général de Gaulle returned visit to her inhabitants the June 14th 1944 and the June 16th 1946.

The town of Isigny is the commune originating in the family of Walt Disney. The name " of Isigny" being itself with the wire of the generations transformed into Disney.

The Communauté of communes Isigny Grandcamp Intercom gathers 21 communes of the canton (Asnières-in-Bessin, the Madness and Holy-Marguerite-of It do not form part of it).
