Match without point nor sure blow
With the Baseball, a match without point nor sure blow (called No hitter in English) is an exploit carried out by one (or more rarely, several) launchers not granting any sure Coup to the adversary lasting a match. The word comes from the English No hits (not from “strike”), and one employs the same term in several languages (German, Dutch and Italian, for example). In French, the expression “ match without sure blow ” could also be used, in particular in the cases, less frequent, where a launcher does not grant any sure blow to an adversary which will mark all the same points via other means: players could achieve the goals, for example, by tapping Goal-on-balls, by errors of the defensive, if there are a Mauvais throw or a last Balle, where if a striker is Atteint of a shooting. In certain very rare cases, a team was victim of a match without sure blow, but nevertheless gained the part.
A perfect Match is a match without sure blow during which no player of the opposing team reaches the paths, by any means that it is. In a normal match of 9 handles, without prolongation, the opposing team will thus see her 27 strikers withdrawn in the order.
For a launcher, a match without point nor sure blow is regarded as a rare and extraordinary exploit, and a perfect match is still more.
Definition of the major Leagues of baseball
Here translated into French the definition of a No-hitter , according to the official rules of the major Leagues of baseball: “A match without official sure blow occurs when one (or several) launcher (S) does not grant (NT) any sure Coup during the complete course of a match, that is to say at least 9 handles”. According to this rule, a launcher having launched an official match of less than 9 handles (what occurs at the time of a meeting stopped after 7 handles because of the bad weather, and declared finished, without need for being begun again) will not be credited with a match without sure blow if it were in way to make a success of one of them; a launcher having launched will not be credited either 9 handles without sure blow, before yielding of it a first to the adversary during the additional handles of prolongation. Since these precise details were emitted by the major Leagues in 1991, some launchers actually launched parts without sure blow of less than 9 handles which differently would have been worth to them to appear in the book of the records.
History and records
-
With the conclusion of the regular season 2007, a total of 255 matches without point nor sure blow had been launched in the history of the major Leagues of baseball, for an average from more or less two per season. Of this number, only 17 matches without sure blow were also perfect matches.
-
the first match without sure blow was launched by George Bradley in 1876. Its team, the Brown Stockings of Saint-Louis triumphed over the Dark Blues of Harford.
-
Regarded as the uncontested king of the sure matches without blow, Nolan Ryan holds the record of all times for the greatest number of No-hitters in career, him which launched 7 with three different teams from there. It is also, at 44 years, the oldest launcher to have achieved similar exploit. Behind Nolan Ryan, one finds Sandy Koufax with 4 matches without sure blow, whereas Cy Young and Bob Feller made a success of of them three each one. On the whole, only 35 launchers in all the history of major baseball launched more No-hitter . Among these players, Randy Johnson is that of which the 2 matches without sure blow were spaced (the first being a perfect match the June 2nd 1990 then the second a match without point nor sure blow, nearly 14 years later, the May 18th 2004). On the other hand, both the most brought closer were those of Johnny Vander Meer, which in 1938 was the first (and to date only) launcher to be succeeded of the No-hitters at the time of two consecutive departures.
-
It arrived twice in the history that two matches without sure blow are launched the same day: Ted Breitenstein and Jim Hughes the April 22nd 1898, then Dave Stewart and Fernando Valenzuela the June 29th 1990.
Matches without sure blow compounds
A match without sure blow is general rule, but not obligatorily, the work of only one launcher. For various reasons, several artillerists could be called with the monticule during the part. In the history of the major Leagues, one counts 9 matches without sure blow “compounds”.
The first occurred the June 23rd 1917, whereas legendary the Babe Ruth undertaken the match with the monticule for the Red Sox of Boston. However, after having allocated a Goal-on-balls with the first striker of the match, Ruth was expelled to have argued with the referee. Ernie Shore replaced it. After the runner was withdrawn while trying to steal the second, Shore withdrew in the order the 26 following strikers. The match without sure blow was credited jointly in Ruth and Shore.
The only match without point nor sure blow compound to be succeeded in additional handles occurred the July 12th 1997, therefore the Francisco Cordova launching the 9 regular sleeves and the Releveur Ricardo Rincon 10th, in a profit of 3-0 of the Pirates of Pittsburgh on Houston.
The record for the greatest number of launchers used at the time of a match without sure blow is of six, by the Astros of Houston, the June 11th 2003 against the Yankees of New York. Were credited with the exploit: therefore the Roy Oswalt and the raising devices Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner.
Only one launcher in the history was credited of more than one match without sure blow, like launcher therefore and as a launcher of changing. It is about Mike Witt, which makes a success of a perfect match from 1 to 0 for the Angels of California against the Rangers of Texas the September 30th 1984, then launched the 2 last sleeves of a victory of 1-0 of Angels on the Mariners of Seattle in changing of therefore the Mark Langston, the April 11th 1990.
Matches without sure blow by players recruits
A match without point nor sure blow is regarded as a fact of exception, but is not necessarily the prerogative of the cream of the launchers of baseball. Indeed, the share of chance and bad luck which influences the realization of such an exploit made so that several launchers stars, members of the Temple of re-elected baseball, never launched of part without sure blow, whereas on the other hand certain players having arrived hardly counts other achievements there. It is the case of Bumpus Jones of the Reds of Cincinnati, which launched a match without point nor sure blow to its first match in the major ones, the October 15th 1892. Jones took part on the whole only in 8 matches in the great leagues, finishing his career with 2 victories and 4 defeats, and a miserable Moyenne of deserved points of 7,99.
When to Sore Holloman, it launched a match without point nor sure blow for the Browns of St Louis in 1953 to its very first departure in the major leagues (the weather was not however about its first match, having already been some appearances concerns some earlier in the season). The No-hitter of Holloman proved to be the first of its… three victories in the major leagues (against 7 defeats), all which have occurred in 1953. More recently, in 2001, Bud Smith, of the Cardinals of St Louis, launched a No-hitter towards the end of its season recruit. It undertaken the following season at Cardinals, but was quickly turned over to the minor leagues after bad performances. It launched never again in the major ones…
Notable fact: Wilson Alvarez, of the White Sox of Chicago, succeeds in a match without point nor sure blow with its second departure in the major ones, whereas at the time of a first at the very least difficult departure in career it had been driven out match after having allocated two blows of circuits and three points, without same having withdrawn an unfavourable striker.
The September 1st 2007, Clay Buchholz, of Red Sox of Boston, makes a success of to him also a match without sure blow with its second departure in the major ones, at the time of an unambiguous profit of 10-0 on Baltimore.
Since 1901, 21 recruits made a success of a match without sure blow. None made a success of two of them.
Match of opening
The only match without point nor sure blow at the time of the inaugural match of the season took place in 1940, a April 16th, and was the work of Bob Feller of White Sox of Chicago.
On the other hand, two No-hitters were successful at the time of the last meeting of the regular season: the September 28th 1975, four launchers of the A' S of Oakland (Emptied Blue, Glenn Abbott, Paul Lindblad and Rollie Fingers) share the exploit against the Angels of California, and the September 30th 1984, Mike Witt of Angels launches a perfect Partie against the Rangers Texas.
Series of after-season and world Series
The October 8th 1956, Don Larsen became the first, and to date the only launcher, to make a success of a match without point nor sure blow (and a perfect match!) in world Series, in a triumph of 2-0 of the Yankees of New York on the Dodgers of Brooklyn. This single exploit occurred at the time of the match #5 of the final Series, gained by the Yankees in seven confrontations, and with the conclusion of which Larsen was named player par excellence world Series.
No other match without sure blow (nor perfect match) was successful in eliminatory matches.
Defeats in spite of a match without sure blow
It arrived only twice that matches without point are launched nor sure blow in a defeat. The April 23rd 1964, Ken Johnson of the Houston Colt 45 ' S east demolishes 1-0 by Reds of Cincinnati, without to have granted sure blow. The April 30th 1967, Steve To bore and Stu Miller, of the Orioles of Baltimore, do not grant any sure blow to the Tigers de Detroit but the latter carry it all the same 2 to 1.
In the case of three other launchers, Silver King in 1890, Andy Hawkins in 1990 and Matt Young in 1992, 8 handles without sure blow were successful, but at the time of a match carried out (and gained) by the local team. In these particular cases, after the visitor team, tie of the back in the match, were withdrawn at the beginning of 9th handle without to have known to create the equality, it is not of any utility which the local team returns to the stick in end of 9th. The three launchers previously quoted thus did not on the occasion to supplement (or waste) a No-hitter ; it thus launched not-official matches without blow sure of eight handles, in matches in addition lost by their team.
Matches without sure blow potential wasted in prolongation
Thirteen matches without sure blow potential, including two perfect parts, were wasted in additional handles, after 9 regular sleeves without sure blow.
Among these some cases: the May 2nd 1917, the launchers leaving Fred Toney the Reds of Cincinnati and Hippo Vaughn of the Cubs of Chicago did not grant any sure blow to the adversary lasting the 9 first sleeves, which were concluded by an equality from 0-0. Reds gained the part (and reflect fine with the claims of Vaughn) by striking two blow sure and registering a point in tenth handle. Fred Toney, on his side, withdrew in the order Cubs when those returned to the stick, and was credited with a match without point nor sure blow of 10 handles. It should be noted that this confrontation is to date the only match of major baseball where no team sure blow at the time of the 9 regular sleeves did not strike.
In 1959, Harvey Haddix, Pirates of Pittsburgh was illustrated with nothing less than 12 perfect sleeves… before losing the match without sure blow with the hands of the Brewers of Milwaukee, which gained the part in 13th handle.
The last launcher to see falling a match without sure blow in becoming at the time of handles of prolongation was Pedro Martinez, then at the Expos of Montreal, which after 9 handles without allocating sure blow with the Padres de San Diego, yielded in 10th handle.

Teams and matches without sure blow

On the other hand, each club of the modern era of baseball was victim of at least a match without sure blow. At the conclusion of the season 2007, the team which was not victim since longest is Cubs of Chicago, with now 42 seasons without an unfavourable launcher not launching a No-hitter to their depend.
