Match-play
The Match play is a formula of computation of score to the Golf (different from the Stroke-play). It is described with rule 2 of the rules of golf. In the male professional tournaments of golf, few tournaments are organized according to this formula. One little to quote the Ryder Cup which oppose an American team to European, President Cup between an American team and a team of the remainder of world (nonEuropean) or the championship of the world of match-play.
Among the female tests in match-play one can quote the Solheim Cup, fémininin equivalent of the Ryder Cup. PGA Championship, one of the 4 major tournaments, which was in the beginning a tournament of match-play, became stroke-play in 1958.
Contrary to the stroke-play, which has as a unit the blow, the unit of score of the match-play is the hole. With each hole can be gained a point. The golfor who has the smallest score on a hole gains a point. So golfeurs are with equality, then the hole is regarded as divided.
At the beginning of the play, the scores are to zero. The scores are recorded in the direction where a player carries out in front of another player. For example, if a player has gained 3 holes, and that the player B gained a hole and that they divided 2 of them (or more), one says that the player has carries out the part, by " 2-up" (3 less gained holes 1 godforsaken hole).
A team which carries out by NR hole with NR remaining hole to play is declared " slept-N" , or simply " dormie" , which means that they require for a hole with equality to gain the match (or conversely, that the other team must gain all the holes remaining to be played to put at equality the match).
The part is finished since the team which loses (which is NR down) cannot catch up with any more the team which carries out (which is NR up).
The final score in match-play can be declared in 3 ways:
- 1 hole or 2 holes (1up or 2up), which means that the 18 holes were played and that the winner is at the head by a hole or two holes. It is not possible to gain 3up since in this case there, the player already gained at the end from the 17.
- M and NR, where M is one or two of more than NR, means that (18 - NR) holes were played and that the winner carries out per M holes. That indicates that victorious carries out it by more holes than the remaining number of holes to play, therefore the match does not need to be concluded its. For the same reasons that front, it is impossible M is 3 of more than NR. the greatest margin that a player can have on a course in 18 holes is 10 and 8 , which means that it gained the first 10 holes. For example, if the score of the match is " 4&2" , that means that the two players played each one 16 holes and that the margin is of 4 holes.
- Xe hole, where X is larger than 18. That indicates that the players are with equality after 18 holes and that they played a sudden death for (X - 18) holes until a player missed a hole.
