Matam
Matam is a city of the Eastern Senegal, located at 410 km in the east of Saint-Louis.
History
The city was set up in commune in 1952.

Matam is an agricultural village which extends on both sides from the shopping mall, along the river, vis-a-vis the Mauritania.The closest localities are Tiambe, Tiguere Soubalbe, Tiguere Yene, Diamel and Navel.
Population
The inhabitants are mainly Peuls (Toucouleurs or Poulars).At the time of the censuses of 1998 and 2002, Matam respectively counted 10.722 and 14.620 inhabitants.
In 2007, according to the official estimates, the population of the city would rise with 17.324 people.
