Master off Philosophy

With the the United Kingdom, in Australia and New Zealand like in some other Anglo-Saxon countries, the Master off Philosophy (more often shortened M.Phil. ) indicates an university degree of the second cycle sanctioning a research task and the drafting of a Thèse or memory ( M.Phil thesis ).

This diploma, directed towards research and generally passed after a Bachelor , continues in theory with a Ph.D.. In certain cases, when one does not arrive at the end of his doctorate, the M.Phil can be delivered in substitution for the diploma initially préparé.
This diploma, that certain universities deliver in one year, can be regarded as equivalent with old the Diplôme of thorough studies (DEA) French (before the reform LMD).

With the Netherlands, the M.Phil. is a diploma of research decreed by certain departments of the universities (for the majority in the field of the Art S, social sciences, Archéologie, Philosophie and Théologie). The selection for this type of diploma very high and is mainly reserved to the students aiming at a university career. After this diploma, the students continue normally by a Ph.D.. The lessons are given in English, much students who follow the formation come from abroad.

In Belgium, only the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven has such a formation, in philosophy. It is ManaMa ( Master Na Master , Master after Master ) and lasts one year. As in the other countries, the formation is a preparation for a doctorate.

Certain American universities also decree Master off Philosophy . In these universities, the diploma is decreed with the students in doctorate having followed the courses necessary but not having supported to them thesis yet. Many students regard this diploma only as one formality and, for time-savings and from money, do not come to claim this diploma.
