Massacre of Lachine
The massacre of Lachine is the event during which 97 Canadian S “was massacred” by Iroquois, on August 5th 1689 with Lachine.
Facts
The deployment of the French towards the West during the years 1670 and 1680 prevents the confederation of Iroquois from having access to new sources of beavers and threat treats it furs of New York. At that time, France and England are in peace, this is why the authorities of New York choose to push Iroquois, whose relations with France are already tended, on the path of the war. The morning of August 5th, 1689, some 1500 warriors attack the small colony of Lachine in the west of Montreal, kill 24 colonists and capture some more than 60 others. The ferocity of the attack terrorizes the inhabitants of the area of Montreal. Indeed, of tortures are inflicted to the villagers and of the rumors run in connection with cannibalism. In addition, the prisoners will never be re-examined. During the decade which will follow, the oppositions between French and Indians will become increasingly violent and the villages of the area of Montreal will undergo several other massacres of the kind.
Interpretation
The historical context was that of the successors of Frontenac as governor, whereas Iroquois were shown threatening towards the inhabitants of the colony. The first successor, the Bar, was not with the height, militarily. After one year of mandate, it is replaced by Denonville which then more mad intimidated the tribes iroquoises. The massacre of Lachine is thus seen like the result of this administration.
