Mass number

The mass number ( has ) is the term employed in Chimie and Physique to represent the number of Nucléon S, i.e. summons it number of Proton (S) and of Neutron (S) constituting the core of a Atome.

For example, carbon-12 (12C) has 6 Proton S and 6 Neutron S, therefore its mass number is 12=6+6.

It is this number which determines the isotopic variety of a chemical element. It specifies the number of neutrons, the number of protons being known by the Atomic number, ( Z ).
