Mask Mukudji

The Masque Mukudji is originating in the ethnic group Bapunu in the area of the Ngounié (Gabon).

Origin

Description

The mask represented above is high 18 cm and broad of 36. It is out of tender wood and Raphia.

The mask has 27 scarifications laid out in rhombus: 9 frontal and 18 temporal (9 on each side). An interpretation would like that figure 9 corresponds to the 9 clans which the ethnos group includes/understands.

Use

This mask is carried by the men.

The dancer who carries it, ridden on stilt S, symbolizes the authority. He holds in his hands two drive out-flies, symbols of wisdom and authority, which he continuously agitates with the sound of the drums and the trumpets.

The purpose of this mask is to alleviate the spirits of the dead beautiful young girls. It occurs at the time of the dance " Mbwanda ".

It is also used in the villages, at the time of the diurnal ceremonies of entertainments such as the birth of twins.
