Mascouche

Mascouche is a Ville Quebec (Canada) located in the regional Municipalité of county the Mills. Its inhabitants are the Mascouchois . In 2006, Mascouche was the 30e city in importance in Quebec by its population.

Geography

Located at a few kilometers hardly in the North-East of Montreal, the town of Mascouche is crossed by the river of the same name. It is close to the towns of Repentigny, Terrebonne, the Epiphany and Saint-Roch of Black bass.

With highway 640 in the south and the highway 25 which crosses it in full center, Mascouche profits much from the intersection of these two major arteries. The trade are mainly concentrated on the Rise Masson and on the part is Gascon Way.

One finds in Mascouche a municipal airport. It is equipped with a track of 915 meters, paved and provided with a lighting system for the landing of night. The frequency of communication is of 122.35Mhz. One finds there flying schools such as the Academy of aviation, a flying school recognized in North America.

Mascouche extends on a surface from 108 km ² including one important part is protected by payments from conservation. Nearly 80% of the territory is zone agricultural although the number of active farmers is very weak at present. These farmers are especially gardener-market-gardeners.

One finds in Mascouche, the Natural park of the Pond of the Large Slope whose surface borders that of the park of the Royal Mount.

History

Before becoming the current city, the territory of Mascouche belonged to a vast seigniory named Repentigny, pertaining since 1647, with Pierre LeGardeur. The last lord will be John-Henry Pangman, until the abolition of the mode seigneurial in 1854.

The colonization, which begins in 1717 along the Mascouche river, sees then the birth of the village and the field of the Rapid, i.e. the seigneurial field of Mascouche. The concessions will come later from the Round Hut, in 1721, and of the Large-Slope-Saint-Philippe, in 1770.

St-Henri de Mascouche is one of the oldest parishes of the Province of Quebec. It was founded in 1750 and counted 542 inhabitants. The first church was built in 1749-1750 because, according to the official registers, the first baptism took place on December 29th, 1750 by the priest Simon-Amable Raizenne.

Mascouche obtained its statute of city on December 9th 1970, whereas the mayor was Mr Gilles Forest.

The name of Mascouche derives from Algonquin " Maskutew" or " Mascouteau" and wants to say according to certain historians, " plain, meadow unie". According to other historians, it would come from an Amerindian word meaning " ourson".

The " M" emblem of Mascouche represents a young tree in growth evoking the vocation of a suburban town in the middle of nature.

In the armorial bearings, the currency " cedo nulli" results in " I do not yield it to personne" and applies to the eagle of the armorial bearings. The eagle is a very noble and proud bird which, by its prowesses, does not yield to any other bird.
