Masaniello
Masaniello , contraction of Tomaso Aniello , is a Neapolitan Révolution naire .
Fisherman born on June 29th 1620 with Amalfi, it puts himself in 1647 at the head of the people risen against the receivers of the taxes. He besieges the Spanish viceroy (Duc of Arcos) in his palate, forced it to abolish the tax on the food products and to recognize it as governor, and is, during seven days, absolute master in Naples.
Dazzled its sudden fortune, it quickly becomes arrogant and cruel, making in the city of the massacres, before being soon abandoned his and assassinated by emissary of the viceroy on July 16th 1647.
He is the hero of two operas:
