Mary Somerville
Mary Somerville (December 26th 1780 - November 28th 1872) was at the same time writer and scientist Scottish in a time when the participation of the women in science was discouraged.
It was the girl of the admiral William George Fairfax and was born in the presbytery from Jedburgh, at the border of the Scotland. It was the house of the sister of its mother who was the woman of Thomas Somerville (1741-1830), author of My Own Life and Times . His/her son will become the second husband of Mary. It accepted an education décousue and ends up controlling the Algèbre and Euclide in secrecy after having left the school, and without any outside assistance. In 1804 it Maria with her cousin moved away, the Consul of Russia in London, the captain Samuel Greig, who died in 1807; they had two children.
After the death of her husband the heritage enabled him to acquire freedom to continue its studies. In 1812 it Maria with her other cousin, Doctor William Somerville (1771-1860), inspector of Medical Army Board, which encouraged it and an important help in physical sciences brought to him. They had four other children.
In 1831, Mary published The Mechanism off the Heavens (Celestial mechanics) which was a great success.
