Mary Onyali

Mary Onyali-Omagbemi , born the February 3rd 1968, is old a Athlète Nigeria, specialist in the sprint.

It conquered by its successes the nickname of “queen Nigerian of the sprint”. She grew in a family without father, this one had given up it, but with his/her mother is three little brothers and sisters of which she occupied herself while his/her mother was going to work. This one attached a great importance to the education of Mary which started as of the school to be interested in the sport, mainly with the Long jump and to the High jump.

With its entry with the college, its interest for the sport still developed. She wanted nothing to know of a normal social life implying a young marriage and a family. She wanted to continue to study. As its family could not to any more finance her studies him, it decided to go to study with the the United States with a sporting grant. During the championships juniors of Nigeria, it made acceptable performances but failed twice consecutively on the international scene. Its temperament enabled him to receive a purse, with the support of his/her current father-in-law, to go to study of 1985 to 1990 with the Université of Texas.

With the Olympic Games of summer of 1988 with Seoul, it could not be qualified for the final. With Barcelona for the Olympic Games of summer of 1992, it could not rise on the podium on 100 m and 200 Mr. It however gained a bronze medal out of relay 4 X 100 m with his compatriots Beatrice Utondu, Faith Idehen and Christy Opara-Thompson. They are only four years later, with Atlanta which it succeeds in individually gaining a bronze medal over 200 m behind the Frenchwoman Marie-Jose Perec and Jamaïcaine Merlene Ottey.
