Mary McAleese

Mary (Patricia) McAleese (in Irish: Máire Pádraigín Mhic Giolla Íosa ), born Mary Leneghan (in Irish: Máire Ní Lionnacháin ) the June 27th 1951 with Belfast, is the president of the Republic of Ireland since the November 12th 1997.

Youth

After having passed its adolescence with Dublin, it returns to Belfast to study the Droit, enters to the bar and sign to the University. She also taught the right and the criminology with the Trinity College of the Université of Dublin as of 1975 and made Journalisme radio.

Business world to the policy

She also directed as of 1979, inter alia, a chain of Télévision and the company of electricity of Northern Ireland, while engaging in favor of the handicapped people. She turns over to the University in 1981. In 1987, it has to direct the professional Institute of legal studies where are formed of lawyers of Northern Ireland. In 1994, it is indicated as vice-chancelière of Queen' S University.

Presidency

Catholic very active, it preaches the reunification of Ireland and is regarded as preserving strict. Candidate of the party Fianna Fail, it is elected in 1997 with the presidency of the State, where it replaced Mary Robinson as an eighth president. She is the first Head of State born in Northern Ireland.

October 1st 2004 at midday precise, it is declared re-elected for last a seven years mandate, being candidate of right and no candidate being presented against it.

In 2006, it is classified like the 55e the most powerful woman in the world by the magazine Forbes. In 2007, it is classified 58e.
