Mary Anne Clarke

Mary Anne Clarke (April 3rd, 1776 - June 21st, 1852) was the mistress of Frederick, duke of York and Albany.

Born Mary Anne Thompson , it became the mistress of the Duke in 1803 when he was commander-in-chief of the army. In 1809, bursts a national scandal when it is discovered that it had sold military commissions. York was obliged to resign, but it was exonerated later. M.A. Clarke was continued for slandering and was imprisoned for 9 months.

To its release it went to live in France in Boulogne.

His/her daughter married Louis-Mathurin Busson of Maurier and was the mother of the George caricaturist of Maurier (1834-1896) and the great-grandmother of the novelist Daphne of Maurier (1907-1989), which wrote in 1954 a book on Mary Anne Clarke (" Mary Anne").
