Marvejols

Marvejols in Occitan Maruèjols , is a common French located in the department of the Lozere and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called the Marvejolais .

Geography

It is a commune of the Massif Central on the Colagne.

History

Cité medieval marked by the culture occitane, Marvejols was strengthened during the Guerre One hundred Year old, it converts with Protestantism at the 16th century. The shortly after the Massacre of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, it is taken and put in a state of defense by the Protestants. Matthieu Merle will do one of its starting points of them in its conquest of the Gévaudan. It takes then party for Henri de Navarre, future king Henti IV. Besieged during the wars of religion, the city was burnt. Recognizing, Henri IV made it rebuild in 1601.
