Martyrs

the Martyrs is a work Apologétique of François-Rene de Chateaubriand published in 1809. It mixes fiction and philosophical reflection.

Work resembles less one novel than with a epopee where Chateaubriand, through the evocation of Martyr S Christian, glorifie the Merveilleux of Christian inspiration.

Synopsis

Eudore was a Roman officer converted with Christianity. It made release Velléda, a druidess which had been delivered to Rutilius Gallicus, then led to Rome, to have supported into 69-70 the revolt of the Batavians (Germanic people which lived current southernmost Holland) against the Roman Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasien (9-79). The revolt was led by Civilis but Velléda will continue the fight after the tender of this last.

Captive then released, Velléda fell madly in love with Eudore, but the Christian refused to meet the Germanic priestess. Éprise of this last, which refuses to meet her, " it remained a long time supported against a tree to look at the fortress " (Chateaubriant, Martyrs). Of spite, Velléda ends up slicing the throat.

The end of Eudore will hardly be happier. He will perish, with Cymodocée, its liked well in the arena, under the hooks of a tiger " known for its férocité".

With this figure, Chateaubriand puts in scene, once again, the temptation which brings closer two lovers to different cultures and, for once, the transgression of the interdict.
