Martyrdom

Martyrdom ( Ar Breton Merzer in ) is a common department of the Finistere, in the area Brittany, in France.

Martyrdom does not have a Gentilé: its inhabitants are thus neither of Martyrois, neither of Martyriens, nor even of the Martyrs.

Monuments

The village counts one of oldest the enclosed parochial of the Leon, whose construction was spread out between the 11th century and the 17th century.

Events

The village owes its Breton and French name with an event which occurred there on June 25th, 874: the assassination of the king Solomon of Brittany which had found refuge in the church. It is indeed the church which was called " Martyre" ( Ar Merzher ) to be profaned. It gave this name to all the village. As for the king, he was canonized into 910 for his martyrdom and his virtues.

With the the Middle Ages, a prestigious international exhibition was held with Martyrdom. Principal exchanged good: the fabric. The XVè and 16th centuries transfer the greatest activity. The legend wants that the father of Shakespeare in person came to these fairs, which nowadays do not take place any more.
