Marttila
Marttila ( S: T Mårtens in Swedish) is a municipality south-west of the Finland, in the province of Western Finland and the area of Finland of South-west.
History
The first written mention of the place goes back to 1409, little before the dedication of the church of the village to Saint Martin. The commune thus prepares to officially celebrate its 600e birthday in 2009. The August 29th 1599, it is the theater of one of the last battles between the king Sigismond of Sweden and the principal applicant with the throne, his uncle, the future Charles IX.For the period of Swedish colonization, the parish develops as a stage on the road of the bulls , the main roads between Turku and the province of the Häme, the main axe of communication of Finland during several centuries.
During the 20th century, the commune remained largely agricultural, the fertile grounds allowing the subsistence of hundreds of families. The population however started to decrease because of the Rural migration as of 1957, without nevertheless knowing the dramatic fall of certain communes of the center and the east of the country. It decreased indeed by approximately 30% since and is currently practically stable.
Geography
The commune is organized around the river Paimionjoki which crosses it right through. The relief is not very present and the forests were largely cleared to leave the place to the agricultural zones, except for a more wild zone and marshy in the south-east of the municipality. The trunk road 10 between Turku (to approximately 40 km) and Hämeenlinna passes beside the administrative center. This borough is the principal center of population, but the municipality does not count less than 19 other villages.
The close municipalities are Halikko in the south, Paimio in south-west, Tarvasjoki in the west, Pöytyä in north, Koski Tl in the east and Kuusjoki in south-east.
