Martray
Martray is a Isthme of the Ile de Ré (narrower place of the island), which connects its Western and its Is. With the Northern is the Fier of Ars, with the Southern, the Pertuis of Antioche. It is a place where the storms are sometimes violent. The principal economic activity is the Ostréiculture.
Small a Hamlet, of the same name, is installed there; it is attached to the commune of Ars-in-D.
History
Originally, there were not a Isthme but a Détroit which separated then the Ile de Ré until the XVIIe century. Thereafter, Vauban built a Redoute there. At the time of the Second world war, the Hameau which had been formed in this place was destroyed by the German . Currently, Martray finds inhabitants.
Etymology of D: A legend?
The etymology of the word “D” is dubious and the tracks are numerous, but a legend in relation to Martray tells us that Egyptian navigators of the time of Ramsês II wanted to make the round the world tour and would have been failed by great chance in this place where they would have built a small pyramid in the honor of Râ ( Ré ).See here for more details
