Martin Crusius

Martin Crusius , Humanistic and German hellenist, born the September 19th 1526 with Pottenstein, dead the February 14th 1607.

He taught morals, the Greek and Latin with Tubingue, and was one of the first to introduce in Germany the study of the Greek language. Its friendship with Théodose Zygomalas, patriarchal dignitary in Constantinople, philologist and copyist of Greek manuscripts, became famous: both are at the origin of the Philhéllenisme, this ideological current which aroused the interest of the intellectuals in Europe for the Greeks of their time, regarding them as descedants of Hellènes and the Byzantines.
