Martin-Pierre Gauthier

Martin-Pierre Gauthier (Troyes, 1790 - Paris, 1855) is a Architecte French.

Raise Charles Percier, it obtained large the Prix of Rome in 1810 with a project of Christian basilica.

On its return to Paris, he was architect of the old people's homes of Paris and the Louvre of Napoleon i. He taught with the polytechnic school. He was elected member of the Académie of the Art schools in 1842 and was decorated with the Légion of honor in 1844.

The Town of Troyes, satisfied with its preceding work, charged Gauthier with rebuilding the Saint Nicolas's Day old people's home. It carried out the plans of them, but the building site did not supervise any. The contractors accumulated frauds and defects and were continued, as well as the architect, by the administration. Gauthier was condemned to pay 200.000 francs. Incompetent to pay, it was imprisoned with Clichy. On intervention of the Institute, Napoleon III promised to extinguish its debt. However Gauthier succumbed in prison before being able to profit from this gesture.
