Literature

Martigues is the birthplace of the academician Charles Maurras. In its marked speech the July 11th 1888 at the company of the Félibres of Paris, chaired this evening by Maurice Faure, former minister and vice-president of the Senate, then appointed Drome, Charles Maurras delivers his indéfectible attachment to its birthplace. It is a kind of preamble to its enumeration of the “ Thirty beauties of Martigues ” from which there remains about it little, the majority having been éradiquées by the modern era (the fishing and its fleet of tartanes, the saltworks, the 12 mills, etc):

Since we are here to speak about our countries of origin, I then to say it well to you, it is Martigues which I see in these moments. Some ground discs surrounded by the sea, three small islands which make the chain with laying down pond of Berre, with a ribbon of houses which floats on two banks: it would be said that they are there to moor in the continent the three pearls which water would carry or which she engloutirait.
“I likes my village better than your village”, sings us Felix Gras. I it believe well, that I like it! And all my compatriots are like me. Our men of sea know something of it. Formerly, that a vessel left Marseilles and that one as of ours ordered there, with the best wind, the sea moved just enough to gently cart it with Sète, Barcelona or Majorque, do you believe that our captain could move away thus? Ah! But not! Over there, the three bell-towers of the fatherland gleamed. Quickly! A change of course on Goat, quickly, the boat with the sea to carry out it to Martigues, and to embrace last once the places sharp of its heart!

Painting

More than very other, Felix Ziem (1821 - 1911) will be “the painter” of Martigues. Born with Beaune and made at the School of Art of Dijon, after its initiatory voyages of artist in Italy where it remained a long time with Venice, it is in Martigues that it will make build his workshop, cradle of a multitude of paintings, watercolours and drawings. It will give to the city its will have of “Venice of Provence” beyond what it hoped for when it wrote: “I leave for the South to push an observation and workload peak. The ceaseless work of the workshop irritates me and erases the memories. I thus think of seeing Sète, Martigues, Marseilles, of making some studies of sea, mountain, of nature, some impressions being able to produce a result. ”
