Martha\'s Vineyard
Martha's Vineyard (often simply called " the Vineyard") is a island of 231.75 km ² located on the southern part of the peninsula of the Cape Cod, in the State of Massachusetts.
The first communities of Sourd S there settled and developed their clean Langue of the signs, called the language of signs of Martha's Vineyard. The island is now rather known like a site of holidays for the American Jet-set.
History
The first inhabitants of the island were the Amerindians Wampanoag. They always reside there. In their language, Martha's Vineyard is called Noepe ( ground among the currents ). There is an important Wampanoag community with Aquinnah. " Aquinnah " mean " ground with the foot of the hill " in Wampanoag dialect. The city was still recently called Gay Head, but found its original Indian name: Aquinnah.The English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold, which arrived on the island in 1602 gave him its name of Martha's Vineyard, in the honor of his/her daughter died in low age and its mother-in-law, both fore-mentioned Martha.
It would seem (the question is still discussed) that one of the first names of the island would have also been Martin' S Vineyard , of the name of the captain of the ship of Gosnold (John Martin). Certain inhabitants of the 17th century would have given him this name.
Just like the island close to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard made known itself at the XIXe century by the industry of hunting for the whale. The island sent ships all around the world to drive out the whales for their oil and their grease. The discovery of oil in Pennsylvania, thus providing an oil much less expensive for the lamps brought to the quasi disappearance of industry whale-boat in 1870.
The train (Old Colony Railroad) arrived at Woods Hole (on the continent) in 1872. At once, the second home started to multiply on the island.
The island however had difficulties in surmount the crisis of 1929.
Despite everything, its reputation of seaside resort for easy tourists continued to develop.

The President of the United States Ulysses Simpson Grant made many estival stays on the island, in the Gingerbread residence, at the village methodist of Oak Bluffs.Jacqueline Kennedy, mother of John-John and former wife of the President of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy, had a house with Aquinnah which it kept until her death.
The President of the United States Bill Clinton spent there the summer holidays during his mandate, with his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton, now Sénatrice and their daughter Chelsea Clinton.
Famous deaths
The island became sadly celebrates the July 18th 1969, when Mary OJ Kopechne was killed when the car driven by the Senator Ted Kennedy fell from Dike Bridge, bridge connecting the island close to Chappaquiddick to Martha's Vineyard.This sad celebrity was accentuated the July 16th 1999, when the plane manually-controlled by John-John Kennedy, and transporting his wife Carolyn Bessette and its sister-in-law Lauren Bessette, was crushed at sea.

In June 2005, a festival Jawsfest was organized on the island to commemorate the 30 years of film.
1977, Martha's Vineyard tried to Secede from the Commonwealth off Massachusetts along with the island off Nantucket to become the nation' S 51st state.
