History
In the beginning, the village was probably a village of fishermen made up of huts located near Vidourle, it exists a street of the Fishermen besides. The village as of the Moyen-âge was under the supervision of famous the Abbaye of Chant from which the name is probably derived from the eternal chants that the monks shelled. This abbey besides was owner of the majority of the surrounding grounds. One even claims that an underground communicated with the old feudal castle of Marsillargues. The current castle is of Renaissance style.
After the Second world war, the village turns primarily to the Viticulture which becomes its main resource. After having known tops and bottoms and even after the damage caused by the “Mildew”, the vine is remained until in the years 1958; the local cooperative wine cave was in the years 1950 and 1960 the first of Europe by the quantity of wine carried out. With the difficulties encountered by the massive production of “wine of cut” which proved to be difficult to sell, the wine growers are encouraged by premiums to tear off the vines. A new activity is set up: the fruit-bearing Arboriculture (apples, fishings, nectarines, etc), but it knows in its turn breathlessness. The inactivity and the little of local outlets lead many young people to leave the area.
Traditions
The characteristic of the village east which it is located in " Small Camargue" , perimeter of traditions taurines. The ultimate expression of these traditions is reached at the time of the " festivals votives" organized at the beginning of August generally and which lasts ten days. The program of these days is organized by the " Clubs taurins" most famous its quatrevingtième birthday in 2007 will celebrate: " Sounaïa" name of the bell which hangs with the neck of the bull rassemblor the " Simbèou" , with the participation of the municipality.Generally the day starts with an exit in close, in the middle of the bulls and of the gardians of various the local Manade S. It is or rather, it was the occasion for the least young young people and to spend one good moment, to take part in the sorting of the bulls, and to taste famous roasted sausage accompanied by rosy wine. Then the departure of the bulls of the meadows generally of Cailar (3km) was organized for " Abrivado" term which means the arrival of the bulls surrounded of the camargues assembled by the gardians. And all the procession of trailers filled of young people and young girls and also of all generation, drawn by tractors, as well as many other actors running after the bulls to try to make them escape from the procession, by seizing their tail.
The moment more awaited of Marsillarguois was the crossing of the bridge of Vidourle says " recently; BOULET" bridge; , where the idlers come piled up to attend " Abrivado". It was in theory on the blow of midday when horses and gardians, bulls, and caravan of guides achieved this phase commemorative of the votive festivals, each day per same hour. This " abrivado" came to a end as of the crossing of the arenas, where the bulls finally arrived at the end final of the morning. The race of a emboulée young cow requested by young people and less young people, preceded 1 p.m. traditional aperitif. It was the moment of rest deserved after one morning so rich of events of all kinds. An orchestra played of the " Paso doble" who animated many couples sauntering on the track of dance, while others sitted around the " guéridons" and the tenderized glance, sirotaient " Pastis" who ran with floods.
After midday, a race with the rosette of bulls was organized and each marsillarguois reviewed honor to assist by taking seat in the steps of the arenas. The race intersected with an interval proceeded with 6 bulls. According to the day concerned these bulls could be " cocardiers" (high-speed motorboats of the herd) or of the anoubles (young bulls) and the amount of the attributes (rosette, nipples or strings) preceded more or less extremely. " rasetteurs" , very of white vêtus and " tourneurs" tried to achieve wonders under the cordial acclamations of an unchained public.
It was whereas the third act of the day intervened: " the bandido" i.e. the return to close to the bulls under the vigilance of the gardians with the same animation of the population.
The last act of the day was enclosed by enormous meals, that various the " bands of jeunes" organized and which finished at dawn after the ball.
The reproduction of this scenario, was daily so much so that the exhaustion of youth was total at the time of the last day.
Currently and for safety reasons the bandido and the abrivado were modified because the course is reduced and it is limited to the crossing of Marsillargues of the arenas to the " Chicanette". All the other points as a whole are maintained in the tradition.
