Marshal of Empire

The maréchalat is a military dignity of Ancien Mode which had been removed by the Révolution. The Sénatus-consulte of the May 18th 1804 restores it under the name of marshal of Empire , and allots the following day this dignity to 14 generals like 4 “senators having the title of marshals of Empire”, rewarded for their talents and the rendered services.

Not to exceed the maximum number of 16 marshals in activity, some give up their dignity during new nominations. Thus in 1809 of Berthier, named vice-constable of the Empire, of Jourdan, which is named chief of Staff and Murat who becomes king of Naples. Lannes dies the same year. Bernadotte becomes crown prince to Sweden in 1810

The boulevards which surround the second enclosure of Paris, that of the twenty districts, bear the name of marshals of Empire and are named for this reason Boulevards of the marshals . It is interesting to note that on the 26 marshals of the First Empire only 21 have a boulevard which surrounds Paris. Among them, only one: Exelmans, general of Empire was made Maréchal by Napoleon III. Do not have a Boulevard: Augereau, Bernadotte, Grouchy, Marmont, Moncey, Oudinot and Perignon. To note that Augereau, Moncey, Oudinot and Perignon have a street with their name. Bernadotte, Grouchy and Marmont considered as " traitres" are not honoured by the capital.
