Marquis de Cuevas

The Marquis de Cuevas (of its true name Jorge de Piedrablanca de Guana , 8th marquis de Cuevas) is a patron, director of Ballet, founder of a school of dance and a company of dance. American citizen of origin Chile enne, it was born the May 26th 1885 with Santiago from Chile and deceased to Cannes the February 22nd 1961.

After its beginnings with New York, it settles with Monte Carlo in 1947 where, thanks to the money of his wife (a heiress Rockefeller), her first company, the International Ballet and the Nouveau Ballet of Monte Carlo amalgamate the same year to become the Grand Ballet of Monte Carlo.

In 1951 the company takes the name of “Grand Ballet of the Marquis de Cuevas”.

As of 1958, a new modification of the name of the company intervenes since this one will take the name of International Ballet off the Marquis de Cuevas and this until in 1962. Always in 1958, it fights in duel with the choreographer and old directing of the ballet, Serge Lifar.

The new company will be dissolved in 1962 following the death of its founder.

The marquis de Cuevas worked with the dancers more for the time, like Rosella Hightower, George Skibine, André Eglevsky, Ethéry Pagava, or Rudolf Noureev.
