Marowijne

Marowijne is a district of the North-West of the Suriname drawing its name from the river Maroni, Marowijne in Dutch. Its capital is Albina, the other important cities are Moengo and Wanhatti. Located in edge of the Atlantic Ocean it is bordering on the French Guiana in the East (Awala-Yalimapo, Saint-Laurent-of-Maroni the, Mana) and on the districts surinamais of Sipaliwini in the South and Commewijne and Para in the West.

The population amounts to 20.250 person for a surface of 4,627 km ².

At the beginning of the XXe century of the Bauxite was discovered in the area resulting in an economic boom which enriched the colony very whole Dutchwoman. The district has important tourist infrastructures at present.

Marowijne is populated of Kali' Na, an Amerindian ethnos group and maroon blacks going down from the slaves being itself escaped plantations surinamaises at the XVIIIe century.
