Marmoutier ( Maursmünster in German) is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace.

Geography

Marmoutier is a town of 2400 inhabitants, in the North-West of the Alsace, located between Saverne and Wasselonne and at a little more than 30 kilometers of Strasbourg.

History

''' Marmoutier ''' is an old monastery. This monastery was founded as of 589 by Irish monks, Saint Colomban in tête.
After a first fire, the rebuilding is undertaken in 724 under the direction of the Maur abbot who gives him his name Mauri monasterium , the monastery of Mauri. The inhabitants are called there maurimonastériens in reference to this name. The church Abbatiale was devoted in 971 by Erchenbald, bishop of Strasbourg. It is of this last time and the 11th century which date the splendid frontage that one can still admire today.
