Marmara Ereğli
Marmara Ereğli is a city and a district of the province of Tekirdağ, in Thrace, Turkey. Ereğli is located at 30 km in the east of the town of Tekirdağ and at 90 km in the west of Istanbul, close to a small course on the northern coast of the Marmara Sea. It is called Marmara Ereğli to distinguish it from two others plus big cities from Turkey, also called Ereğli (a name which comes from the Greek name '' Heraclea ''), one in the province of Konya, the other on the coast of the Black Sea.
History
A Greek colony of the island of Samos was founded there into -600. It was called in Greek old Perinthos and later Heraclea . It would have been founded by the Samiens towards -599. According to Jean Tzétzès, his name of origin was Mygdonia; later, it was called Héraclée ( Heraclea Thraciae , Heraclea Perinthus ). It is especially famous for its keen and victorious resistance to Philippe II of Macedonia in -340; at that time it seems to have had more importance than Byzance itself.
