Mark David Chapman (born the May 10th 1955), American originating in the Texas, assassinated John Lennon the evening of the December 8th 1980 with New York. Lennon collapsed in front of its residence, with the corner of the 72e street, Central Park with Manhattan.

Earlier in the course of the day, Chapman had tightened the hand of Lennon to require an autograph of him. Chapman awaited it close to its residence and shot with five recoveries at the singer, the lack once but causing four wounds mortals. Chapman had bought gauge 38 to five blows with Honolulu on October 27th 1980. He acknowledged to have wanted to kill Lennon at the time of a preceding voyage to New York but had not had courage to pass to the act.

Fan obsessed by the Beatles, Chapman sees as a John Lennon a hero who will allow him to overcome his life dying woman. He dedicates an admiration without limits for his idol and will go until marrying with Hawaïenne of Japanese origin to have the impression to be the couple Lennon- Yoko Ono. But disappointed by a situation which did not improve, it could only show that which misled it in its hopes: John Lennon, whom he regards from now on as a hypocrite and a traitor. Chapman considered that John Lennon had betrayed his message of peace and of fraternity between the men, that he had become billionaire and carried out a middle-class life, and that he did not distribute his money among the poor. Ironically, at the time of the excavation of its body, the police force found 5000 dollars in its porte-monnaie. In an interview granted to Lynne Schultz on December 26th, 2006, Chapman was justified: " Lennon says to us to imagine a world without possessions, and here it is with million dollars, yachts, properties and investment real estate, making fun of people as me who believed these lies and bought his discs, by building most of our lives around its musique".

Shown murder with the second degree, he was considered to be conscious of his acts. He did not plead the madness in spite of psychiatric antecedents and a Toxicomanie. Imprisoned close to New York, its release was refused with four recoveries (2000, 2002, October 2004 and October 2006).

Its head was put at price on several occasions, of the threats were uttered in its opposition if it had suddenly been released. In May 2005, the British chain Chanel 4 announces its project to make a televised interview of Chapman but Yoko Ono rose in a vehement way against this media passion by attacking the chain.

Mark Chapman was fan of the book the Catch-Hearts , delivers that it had on him during the murder, as well as the Bible and all albums of the Beatles.
