Maritsa

The Maritsa or Maritza (in Bulgarian Марица ), or the Évros or the antique Hèbre (in Greek Εβρος ), or Méritch (in Turkish Meriç ), is a river of the Balkan Peninsula sprinkling the Bulgaria before being used as border between the Greece and the Turkey of Europe.

Note: in French, in a debatable way, the Bulgarian name is often transliterated in “Maritza” (like, for example, in the song Maritza (1968), of Sylvie Vartan). However, the usual transliteration of the Cyrillic letter Ц/ц remains Ts/ts .

Born in the mountains from Rila in Western Bulgaria, it runs in south-east between the Balkans and the mountains of Rhodope and crosses Plovdiv. In the south of Edirne, in Turkey, it is divided temporarily in two arms, Eastern entirely Turkish and the Western one separating Turkey from Greece. It is directed then in the South to enter the Aegean Sea by a Delta close to Enez.

The high valley of Maritsa is the principal East-West route in Bulgaria. The river is not navigable, but is employed for the energy production and the irrigation.
