Marie Vetsera

Marie Vetsera (Vienna, March 19th 1871 - Mayerling, January 30th 1889), mistress of the archduke Rodolphe of Austria.

Biography

From its complete name Marie Alexandrine von Vetsera , Marie Vetsera is born the March 19th 1871 with Vienna. His/her father, the baron Albin Vetsera, is administrator of the goods of the Sultan of Constantinople. His/her mother, Helene Baltazzi, have two brothers who are received at the court (in Hungary, but never Vienna or the protocol does not allow it), and which drives out sometimes with courre in company of the empress Elisabeth.

As of the be 1886, the Vetsera house is attended by all the Austrian aristocracy . Marie Vetsera is then made call Mary to appear more with the mode. At the beginning of 1888, Mary sees the crown prince Rodolphe in Prater, then at the time of a horse-race. It then tries to draw the attention of the archduke by all the means. She then requests the assistance of the countess Marie-Louise Larisch who had formerly been the mistress of her uncle Henri Baltazzi and who remains a good friend of his Helene mother. Indeed, the Larisch countess is not other than the niece Morganatique of the empress Elisabeth, which makes of it the German cousin of Rodolphe (and consequently an important support for the Mary young person).

Mary writes then a letter with the crown prince and this one grants to him with the Automne 1888 an appointment in Prater via the Larisch countess. Then begin an love affair which little by little will become intimate. Each evening when the Helene baroness returns late, a hackney carriage awaits the Mary young person in front of at it in order to leading it to the Hofburg in the archduke. It appears today probable that Mary Vetsera was pregnant of four or five months at the end of January 1889, even if one often said that its first physical relation with Rodolphe took place the January 13rd 1889.

It is found died near her lover the morning of the January 30th 1889 with the hunting lodge of Mayerling. It will receive decent funeral and a burial only a long time after its death.
