Marie II of Portugal

Marie II , of the branch of Bragance of the dynasty capétienne, was queen of Portugal and the Algarves of 1826 with 1828 and of 1834 with 1853, Née in 1819, died in 1853.

Oldest daughter of the king Pierre IV of Portugal and of Algarves and Marie Léopoldine of Austria, which abdicated in its favor in 1826, it was détrônée in 1828 by her uncle infant it Michel, which proclaimed king in his place.

In 1834, Marie helped of its father took again the capacity, and ex-king Michel Ier was exiled.

In 1836, Marie II of Portugal married Ferdinand of Saxony-Cobourg-Gotha which became king-consort under the name of Ferdinand II of Portugal.

  • infante Antonia of Portugal (1845 - 1913), which married the prince Léopold de Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and who was the mother of the king Ferdinand I {{er}} of Romania
  • infant Ferdinand of Portugal (1846 - 1861)
  • infant Auguste of Portugal (1847 - 1889), duke of Coïmbra
  • infant Léopold of Portugal (1849 - 1849)
  • infante Maria da Gloria of Portugal (1851 - 1851)
  • 11th child (1851-1851)
  • infant Eugene of Portugal (1853 - 1853), this childbirth caused the death of the queen.

Died of Marie II with Lisbon the November 15th 1853, succeeded to him his/her oldest son Pierre V, of the Maison of Wettin.

The profile of the queen Marie II was reproduced on the first postage stamp Portuguese in 1853.
