Marie-Nicolas Bouillet

Marie-Nicolas Bouillet , born with Paris the May 5th 1798, dead in December 1865, French writer and historian.

Origin

Bouillet belonged to a family of skilful Armurier S of Saint-Etienne, to which one owes the first idea of the mechanism turning adapted since to the Revolver S, and which they applied to rifles and the guns with wind. One of these rifles, known as Rifle of Louis XV, is still today one of the most beautiful ornaments of artillery the Musée of Paris.

Biography

After having been raises Teacher training school, it was successively professor of philosophy, headmaster, general inspector of the state education. It was made a name at the same time among the scientists and the society peoples. Of its works, the ones are full with a major scholarship, and milked with the history of the philosophical doctrines; the others have the aim of popularizing science. It also translated of the old French Greek.

One owes him:

  • of the editions of the philosophical Works of Cicéron and Sénèque the Young person (Lemaire collection);
  • an edition of the Works of Bacon (3 volumes in-8, 1834), extremely estimated, even in England;
  • a translation of the Ennéades of Plotin accompanied by an important comment, and crowned by the French Academy (3 volumes in-8, 1857 - 1861)
  • finally a whole encyclopedia, forming 3 great volumes in-8:
    • Dictionary of history and geography (1842), delivers which was the first of the works and had many editions;
    • Dictionary of sciences, the letters and arts (1854);
    • Atlas of history and geography .
