Marie-Anne of Austria (1718-1744)
She was named controlling general of the Austrian Netherlands by her sister Marie-Therese, jointly with her husband Charles of Lorraine (letters patent of January 8th 1744). The two new general governors had married the previous day with Vienna (January 7th 1744). In spring 1744, the young couple undertook a long voyage of Vienna to the Austrian Netherlands. They left the imperial capital on February 3rd and arrived on March 24th at Westwezel, village of the Netherlands, where the count de Königsegg-Erps, ambassador plenipotentiary awaited them the head of a detachment of hussards. From there, they went successively, in the middle of brilliant receptions, with Antwerp and Malines. They entered to Brussels on March 26th 1744, guided by the count de Königsegg-Erps. A ceremony was organized to devote their arrival: there were a reception, a Te Deum, banquets, balls, etc But the states habsbourgeois being into full war of succession with Austria, Charles of Lorraine is very quickly recalled to the head of the Austrian armies. May 5th 1744, it announces officially its absence, leaving only the archduchess Marie-Anne with the head of the government of the Netherlands. This one will be helped in the direction of the businesses by the count (future prince) of Kaunitz-Rietberg. In October 1744, Marie-Anne is confined with Brussels of a girl still-born child. She dies shortly after of the continuations of this difficult childbirth, on December 16th 1744. The prince de Kaunitz-Rietberg then had to take again to AD interim the reindeers of the general government of the Netherlands.
