Mariazell
Mariazell is a town of Austria, well-known for its winter sports, located at 143 km in the north of Graz. It is located in the valley of Salza, close to the the Alps styriennes.
The city is founded in 1157 by a monk named Magnus, which settles to build a vault. The area would have been visited before by the Celts, Illyriens, the Romans and the Slavic ones.
In 1344, the city is high with the statute of commercial town. In 1380, the Gothic church of the city is completed. The Turks burn the church and the city in 1420. A major fire took place 1474 and the Turks return in 1532.
In 1683, one fears a new Turkish invasion, but this one does not occur. The city is marked by the Napoleonean wars and suffers from a famine in 1816.
Mariazell is rebuilt in 1832 after another important fire. It is invested by the Red Army at the time of the deuxi; me world war.
In 1948, it receives officially the statute of city and of work of restoration are undertaken. She is visited by Jean-Paul II in 1984.
In 2004, the city annually receives 100.000 pilgrims, who recognize to him the statute of Ville mariale, thanks to his large basilica. In September 2007, the pope Benoît XVI also goes him towards this place of pilgrimage.
