Mariannenaue island

The island Mariannenaue is largest of the river islands of the Rhine and one of the three islands in Germany on which the vine is cultivated. Its surface of 68,5 ha, exceeds that of the island of Mainau, located on the lake of Constancy. It starts opposite Erbach and is stretched over almost a 4,3 km length until Oestrich (km of the Rhine: 513 to 517).

The island, which skirts the area of Rheingau, is classified natural site protected.

Following a heritage, the island became the property of Marianne of Orange-Nassau (Maison of Orange-Nassau), wife of Albert of Prussia. The island is not accessible to the public.

Since 1974, the classified sites of general interest are gathered within the network Natura 2000, which comprises two types of sites:

  • the special Zones of conservation ( ZSC ), defined by the present directive;
  • the Protection zones special , ( ZPS ) defined by the Directive 79/409/CEE known as Directive Birds .
