Marian Adam Rejewski (August 16th 1905 with Bydgoszcz - February 13rd 1980 with Warsaw) is a Cryptologue Polish. It is at the origin of the first cryptanalytic attack on the machine Enigma at the beginning of the Années 1930.

History

The Biuro Szyfrów, office of the Polish figure, had understood that the new German codes were not like the old ones. After the French information (the Second Office directed then by Gustave Bertrand) provided them the plans in 1931, they understood that they did not have to make with a purely mechanical problem. It is what decided them to recruit mathematicians. Among those there, Marian Rejewski was most gifted. It is him which discovered the first faults of Enigma. That license the development of the first “bombs”, the Computer S electromechanics especially conceived for the cryptanalyse, with an aim of boring the Enigma code.

In 1939, the Polish cryptologists evacuate their office in Warsaw urgently and destroy the confidential material during their escapade. While passing by the Yugoslavia and the Italy (neutral in 1939), they reach France. Close to Paris, at PC Bruno, the Poles put themselves at the service of France and start again to work on Enigma. Little before the invasion France in May 1940, the British mathematician Alan Turing remains a few days with the PC Bruno where it will be briefé by his Polish fellow-members.

After the Armistice, the cryptologists move in the south of France and in Algérie, with the risks that could represent. Certain senior officers (Colonel Gwido Langer and Major Maksymilian Cięźki) are captured and in spite of terrible interrogations, the secrecy about the cryptanalyse of Enigma remains intact. As for Marian Rejewski and Henryk Zygalski, it is an epopee which awaits them. First of all through the Spain where they will be temporarily imprisoned, the Portugal and finally Gibraltar, from where they will be able to gain the United Kingdom. Their colleague Jerzy Różycki will have much less chance since he dies drowned at the time of a shipwreck in 1942 in the south of France, after a voyage in Algeria.

In Great Britain, Rejewski is relegated in a treatment unit of figure to Boxmoor. One still does not know why him and Henryk Zygalski were isolated great center of English decoding of Bletchley Park. It is probable that the British decided to resume work on their account without giving the direct access with their Polish ally of it. The Polish mathematicians are then relegated to work plus creatures of habit. As Alan Stripp said: “To make Them work on the Doppelkassetten system, it is like requiring of racehorses to draw from the coaches” (free translation of Setting them to work one the Doppelkassetten system was like using racehorses to sweater coaches ). It is Alan Turing which resumes and continues their work.

November 21st, 1946, demobilized, Rejewski turns over to Poland where it left his wife and her two children. Until its retirement in 1967, it occupies various employment without bond with its qualifications and never speaking about its past of cryptologist. Even the Stalinist secret services, which questioned it several times as an officer of the Polish Army in Occident, never suspected the true part played by Rejewski before and during the Second world war.

It is only in 1969 qu ' it writes its history for the Polish military historical Institute.
